The Tree for Life Day” previously called ‘Green Ghana Day’ was commemorated at Asesewa Senior High School. (ASSEC) on the 5th of June 2025 under the theme ‘Our Power, Our Planet.
Using ASSEC compound as the venue made the headmaster of the school, his staff and all his students the main attendees of the function.
Among the dignitaries were the District Chief Executive (DCE) Mr. Kwesi Lawer, the District Coordinating Director (DCD), and the Presiding Member (PM) of the district assembly, the Head of Forest Services Division, Somanya, a representative of the District Director of Agriculture (DDA), and a representative of Nene Ofie Tagbaja, divisional chief of Asesewa.
In his celebration speech, the District Chief Executive Mr Emmanuel Kwesi Lawer made reference to the theme of the celebration which is ‘Our Power Our Planet’ and explained that our planet empowers us by providing all the needed resources particularly those that help to sustain life.
If we fail to protect and develop the vegetative cover of our planet, we will lose the power to survive because of the adage that says “when the last tree dies, the last man dies”
He went further to point out the various kinds of devastation the environment will suffer if we recklessly deplete its vegetative cover and never border to replace it through tree planting. Among the examples of devastation he cited were severe erosion and silting of dams and rivers, recurrent droughts and floods, very strong and destructive winds, desertification and global warming.
He therefore urged all the expectant recipients of the tree seedlings (supplied by the state through the Forest Services Division) to ensure that they plant them and nurture them to become trees in the future stressing that, this is the only way the program can be successful.
He again reminded the gathering that, ‘the tree for life’ program is a month-long exercise and so everyone should make time to join and plant some trees before the month ends.
