On 5th May 2026, the Volta River Authority (VRA) organized a stakeholder engagement workshop
On the Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) at the
Conference hall of the Upper Manya Krobo District Assembly. The workshop formed part of efforts
To enhance community awareness, preparedness, and environmental sustainability in areas affected
By VRA operations; specifically, along the Volta River.
The workshop aimed to:
* Educate stakeholders and community members on emergency preparedness
* Improve coordination during emergencies
* Promote environmental protection and sustainability
* Clarify stakeholder roles in disaster response
Among the key participants of the workshop were; officials from the Volta River Authority, the
Security services, Hon. Assembly Members, community members, as well as the staff of the
District Assembly.
The District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Emmanuel Kwesi Laweh delivered a brief address,
Highlighting the importance of preparedness, community cooperation, and environmental
Responsibility.
The lead facilitator from VRA took participants through the EPP, where they were educated on the
Various potential emergencies that could affect the community, particularly flooding and dam
Spillage. The presentation also highlighted the importance of early warning systems and effective
Communication channels in ensuring timely information dissemination during emergencies. In
Addition, participants were guided through evacuation procedures and other safety measures aimed
At protecting lives and property in times of crisis.
The EMP was also presented, with discussions centered on the need for proper waste management
Practices, the protection of water bodies, and the promotion of sustainable environmental practices
Within the community. Participants were encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible
Behaviors to help safeguard the natural environment and support long-term community
Development.
At the end of the session, the meeting achieved several key outcomes. There was a noticeable
Increase in awareness and understanding of emergency preparedness among participants, as well
As improved knowledge of environmental management practices. The engagement also
Strengthened collaboration and cooperation between the Volta River Authority (VRA), Assembly
Members, and members of the community.
In conclusion, the workshop successfully enhanced awareness and preparedness among residents
Of the Upper Manya Krobo District. Participants gained valuable knowledge on emergency
Response procedures, environmental management practices, and community safety measures. The
Engagement also strengthened collaboration between stakeholders, including the Volta River
Authority (VRA), Assembly Members, and community members, thereby promoting a collective
Commitment towards disaster preparedness, environmental protection, and sustainable community
Development.
