DISTRICT SANITATION EXERCISE (UMKDA)

A district wide sanitation exercise was organized by the Upper Manya Krobo District Assembly in collaboration with the Asesewa traditional divisional council under the auspices of Nene Ofei Tagbaja. The exercise was aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness, preventing sanitation related diseases, and strengthening community participation in maintaining a healthy district. The District Environmental Health Unit of the District assembly supervised and coordinated the entire exercise to ensure effective implementation across the district.

The exercise recorded active participation from; Hon. Emmanuel Kwesi Laweh (The District Chief Executive – DCE), Mad. Eunice Nalieer (The District Coordinating Director), all Heads of Departments, Staff of the District Assembly, residents within the various neighborhoods, the District Police Commander, the District Ambulance Service, as well as the District Fire Service. The presence of the traditional authorities alongside civil authorities, security agencies, and community members demonstrated strong unity and collective commitment toward improving sanitation in the district.

The sanitation exercise commenced at the District Assembly premises, where the District Chief Executive, the District Coordinating Director, Heads of Departments, and staff convened to begin the cleanup. Activities included sweeping, clearing weeds, desilting choked gutters, and collecting refuse within and around the Assembly premises. Residents within the township simultaneously moved to their respective electoral areas to carry out cleanup activities in their communities.

Upon completion of activities at the initial locations, all participants reconvened at the Asesewa Market, where an intensive cleanup was undertaken to improve sanitary conditions in the market environment. Throughout the exercise, the District Environmental health unit supervised the process to ensure proper coordination, safety, and effectiveness of the activities carried out.

Addresses and Remarks

At the end of the exercise, Mad. Eunice Naalier delivered a brief address, highlighting the importance of regular sanitation practices and collective responsibility in maintaining a clean environment to prevent disease outbreaks. Hon. Emmanuel Kwesi Laweh also encouraged residents and staff to sustain the spirit of participation and environmental discipline beyond the exercise.

The Divisional Chief of Asesewa, Nene Ofei Tagbaja commended the initiative and urged community members to maintain the cleanliness achieved. The district sanitation exercise was successfully carried out through effective collaboration between the Assembly, the traditional council, security and emergency services, as well as the general public.

The exercise reinforced the district’s commitment to improving environmental sanitation and safeguarding public health. It is recommended that such initiatives be organized regularly and supported with continuous public education to ensure sustainable sanitation practices across the districts
